TxDOT's Houston District is looking for independent and capable crew members to staff the Harris County Night Crew. Crew members will be filling the exciting role of responding to overnight emergencies throughout the county, working to keeps roadways safe and open for the traveling public. The Harris County Night Crew will also ensure that overnight maintenance projects are properly delivered to keep Houston roads open. Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize the response of crews.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from the job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
- Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance-related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.

- Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering, construction, and maintenance work
- The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Design, testing, and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures
- Incident management procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
- Maintenance contract inspection procedures
Expert skill in
- Operating light and heavy highway equipment

- Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
