A Certified Police Officer – Certified is an individual who has attended a Police Academy and is certified and licensed as a Peace Officer by TCOLE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement) or who will be certified within 120 days of the testing date. This requirement also includes applicants who have, or are in the process of, challenging TCOLE as an Out of State applicant.
Individuals currently in a police academy and not expected to be TCOLE certified by December 7, 2025, should submit an application as a Track 2 Police Cadet.
An individual in this position serves the needs of the community by enforcing federal, state and local laws and ordinances. He or she supports the protection of life and property, prevents crimes, apprehends criminals, and enforces laws by patrolling an assigned beat on foot, bicycle or in a radio equipped patrol car. He or she ensures the safe and legal operation of the City jail; presents crime prevention programs and performs special assignments at the discretion of a supervisor. The annual salary range is $70,494 to $81,751 Additionally, there is a first-year $10,000 incentive, subject to the City's hiring incentive council-approved ordinance.
Examples of Work
- Testify in court when necessary; conduct preliminary investigations of all reported offenses; feed prisoners; maintain jail; and prepare offense and accident reports.
- Provide information and referral information to victims, family members and witnesses.
- Maintain proficiency in all aspects of police work by attending scheduled in-service training, including qualifying with department issued firearms in compliance with State law and maintaining awareness of changing laws.
- Maintain familiarity with the City's geography and maintain assigned vehicle and equipment.
- Continue to meet the physical ability criterion to pursue and subdue suspects in order to assist citizens and other officers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Subject to 24-hour recall.
Education, Experience, or Certification
- Track 1 – This track represents the traditional hiring process. All applicants must be either be Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certified or will be certified within 120 days of the testing date.
