Definition
These are full-time (Service Workers) position in the City’s Developmental Services Department, Code Enforcement and Health Division. Individuals in these positions examine certain food establishments in the City for compliance with city adopted health regulations. Reporting relationship: Code Enforcement Health Supervisor
Examples of Work
- Routine Food Facility Inspections
- Visiting restaurants /food establishments and checking for expired food, improper refrigeration, and cleanliness of prep areas.
- Verifying food handler certification and proper use of gloves/hair restraints.

Investigating Complaints
- Public complaint investigations: Responding to complaints about unsanitary conditions in businesses or residential properties
- Interviewing employees and customers, collecting photos, and documenting findings for follow-up.
- Conduct inspections and follow-up inspections for compliance with city codes and ordinances; document discrepancies;
- Plan Reviews
- Temporary Event Inspections
- Reviewing applications and ensuring food safety measures are in place.
- Conducting same-day inspections of food booths at local festivals or community events.
- Ensuring temporary handwashing stations are operational and food is being held at safe temperatures.
- Offer and provide solutions to food establishment owners and food management personnel;
- Health education and Outreach: Educating food services workers on safe practices
- Complete administrative duties by responding to phone calls, emails; post inspection information electronically; compile reports; and maintain files;
- Works with and educates the general public with regards to enforcement of laws, rules, regulations and ordinances;
- Perform other related duties as assigned;
- Subject to 24-hour recall.
- Ability to work professionally, effectively with the public and City personnel possessing strong customer service skills
Education, Experience, or Certification
Health Inspector I: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate; a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License; a minimum of two (2) years related professional experience required.
Health Inspector II: Associate’s degree in health management, education, business or closely related field from an accredited college or university or a minimum of four (4) years professional experience as a Health Inspector or closely related occupation required. Registered Sanitarian, Sanitarian-in-Training, current State of Texas Code Enforcement Officer Certification; municipal experience preferred.
