Based out of our South Harris Area Office, you’ll enjoy a collaborative and supportive work environment that blends office-based responsibilities with occasional field coordination. You’ll contribute directly to public safety and efficiency by managing permits, supporting maintenance crews, and coordinating damage claims for state property—helping ensure our roadways are safe, functional, and ready for the millions of Texans who rely on them every day.
In this role, you’ll track, and process right-of-way permits, help recover costs for roadway damage, and serve as a vital link between TxDOT, utility companies, contractors, and the public. Your attention to detail, organization, and communication skills will make a meaningful difference in daily operations. Whether reviewing permit applications or supporting roadway repair documentation, your work keeps projects on schedule and compliant with state standards.

Maintenance Support Tech I
Performs administrative support-related work in a maintenance office or district headquarters. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Maintenance Support Tech II
Performs administrative support-related work in a maintenance office or district headquarters. Work requires contact with high-level managers, executives, governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Maintenance Support Tech I
- Answers the telephone, evaluates requests, answers questions, routes messages, and serves as receptionist or front desk assistant.
- Assists district personnel with annual inventory of supplies, stockpiles and minor equipment.
- Maintains and updates office files/records/logs and a wide variety of automated systems in support of personnel, finance, budgeting, maintenance, inventory, contracts, purchasing, travel information, and/or permitting activities.
- Maintains radio contact with field units; responds to assists with emergency situations as required.
- Prepares statistical reports and verifies for accuracy and completeness.
- Reviews, prepares and negotiates applicable program purchases for services, office materials, supplies, tools and equipment and monitors contracts.
- Maintains calendars for department personnel to include scheduling meetings, coordinating and making appointments, and travel arrangements.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Maintenance Support Tech II
Includes all essential duties listed for Maintenance Support Tech I as well as:
- Assists with data entry for construction record-keeping.
- Conducts monthly spot inventories, verifies inventory findings, reconciles and coordinates with Business Services on adjustments needed.
- Edits correspondence, reports, forms, and documents for proper format, spelling, grammar, punctuation, typographical errors, syntax, style, sentence structure, content, and clarity.
- Reviews and processes records of completed maintenance projects.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Maintenance Support Tech I
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: None
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Maintenance Support Tech II
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 1 YEAR in administrative or clerical support, customer service, or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent) College education and/or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
Maintenance Support Tech I and II
- Experience working with or processing permits, claims, or government documents.
- Familiarity with TxDOT systems such as MMIS, UPS, DCS, or SharePoint.
- Prior experience working in a transportation, public works, or utility coordination environment.
- Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and technical documents.
Competencies:
Maintenance Support Tech I
- Some knowledge of:

- Some skill in:
- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
- Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management
- Preparing correspondence/documents using correct spelling, grammar and punctuation; proofreading and reviewing documents for clarity and consistency
- Preparing technical/statistical reports
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Maintenance Support Tech II
Includes all competencies listed for Maintenance Support Tech I as well as:
- Considerable knowledge of:
- Automated record-keeping methods
- Proficient skill in:
- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
- Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management
- Preparing correspondence/documents using correct spelling, grammar and punctuation; proofreading and reviewing documents for clarity and consistency
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
- Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
- Maintains composure when handling problems, stressful situations, continuous change, or unexpected developments
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Maintenance Support Tech I and II
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
- Standing - prolonged periods of time
- Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
