TxDOT's West Harris Maintenance Office is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I or II based in Houston, TX.

Position Description


Equipment Mechanic I

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Equipment Mechanic II

Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Equipment Mechanic I

  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
  • Repairs and adjusts steering assemblies.
  • May travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Equipment Mechanic II

Includes all essential duties listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:

  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
  • Trains less experienced technicians.
  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Performs emergency spot repairs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Equipment Mechanic I

Education: None in formal education

Experience: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years' experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Motor Vehicle State Inspector - Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.

Equipment Mechanic II

Education: None in formal education

Experience: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years' experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Equipment Mechanic I

  • Considerable knowledge of:
    • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
    • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Some knowledge of:
    • State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use
  • Proficient skill in:
    • Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
    • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
    • Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
    • Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
    • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
    • Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Ability to:
    • Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures

Equipment Mechanic II

Includes all competencies for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:

  • Extensive knowledge of:
    • Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
    • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Expert skill in:
    • Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
  • Proficient skill in:
    • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
    • Using applicable electronic test equipment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Equipment Mechanic I and II

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Stooping - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Crouching - bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Visual Acuity - determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
