About the opportunity:
We are seeking a candidate for a Staff Archaeologist position to support the Houston, Texas office. Under the supervision of a Project Archaeologist or Principal Investigator, the Staff Archaeologist performs field and office tasks while working with and supervising crew members.

This position is field-based, with overnight travel required during the field season. Ten-day sessions are typical. This is a mobile position.

What you will accomplish:
  • Conduct background research for cultural resources studies, including file searches and historic records searches.
  • Ensure necessary equipment and other resources are ready for fieldwork.
  • Assist in supervising fieldwork under a project archaeologist or principal investigator, including cultural resources survey, testing, construction monitoring, and/or excavation and ensures quality and completeness of data collected.
  • Communicate regularly with the project manager on fieldwork progress through daily reports.
  • Provide QA/QC review of field documents and site forms.
  • Contribute to agency report deliverables.
  • Maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, developing safety plans (when applicable), and anticipate potential safety hazards.
  • A key element of your job will be to supervise a small crew while conducting environmental fieldwork. This includes:
    • Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
    • Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
    • Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
    • Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field.
    • Monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback
Experience and qualifications for success:
Required:
  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archaeology
  • Participation in an accredited archaeological field school or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Experience leading crews of field technicians.
  • Ability to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have valid driver's license and able to meet SWCA’s driver requirements.
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in anthropology or archaeology
  • Experience with implementing the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) permitting processes

An employee in this Texas-based position can expect an hourly rate of $25.14/hr.- $32.17/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
