Job Overview
The Network Services Analyst provides first line support to District staff on both wired and wireless network services. This role spends much of their time in the field resolving connectivity issues due to power outages, failed equipment, fiber optic cuts, or wireless issues. The Network Analyst provides second tier support to Desktop analysts working device connectivity issues in coordination with the Field Network Engineers. Additional duties include monitoring network infrastructure; responding to requests for assistance from Desktop; resolving switch misconfiguration issues; working infrastructure projects to upgrade or replace equipment.

Position DescriptionNetwork Analyst

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Incident Management and Monitoring

  • Participate in Incident Management Process to resolve network outages; use established procedure to determine if the outage is due to power outage, cut fiber, or failed equipment.
  • Respond to requests to restore equipment that is down due to power, failed UPS, or has rebooted into rommon mode.
  • Coordinate with Early Morning Outage analysts or Desktop analysts responding to network outages. Open tickets for cut fiber optic circuits and work as a point of contact until the cut is resolved. Work with the vendor to gain campus or datacenter access when needed.
  • Isolate network issues to infrastructure faults, configuration faults, or equipment faults and quickly work to restore service when possible. Escalate faults to the appropriate team when needed.
  • Actively monitor services in Solarwinds NPM and attend to equipment on the critical list.
  • Engage Field Network Engineers to resolve issues that require skills beyond Desktop Analysts or Second Tier support
  • Follow established procedures on maintaining spare inventory and disposing of assets.
  • Follow established procedures to RMA failed equipment
Provide Second Tier Network Support
  • Provide second tier network support to Desktop Analysts to help resolve wired and wireless connectivity issues with endpoints
  • Work support tickets that require isolating network faults on end user equipment.
  • Provide support to other departments with network connected equipment such as Facilities, HVAC, Life/Safety (cameras and alarms), and Transportation. Work with them to understand how their systems work across the network to troubleshoot faults or performance issues.
  • Work with the Field Network Engineers or others on the team to isolate network switching and routing faults.
  • Work with the Wireless Network Engineers to isolate wireless network faults.
Team Projects
  • Work on network-related projects as required.
  • Upgrade device code when required. Work projects where multiple devices need code upgrades.
  • Update Solarwinds NPM when device settings change.
  • Assist in keeping Cisco Emergency Responder updated with switch information when switches are added or removed from the network.
On Call Rotation and Circuit Repair
  • Participate in On Call rotation with other analysts and engineers
  • May be required to answer call outs for assistance before or after regular hours to help re-establish critical network or voice services
  • May be required to work with the fiber provider to gain access to sites after hours for repair work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Associate's degree preferred
  • Comp TIA A Plus Certification CompTIA A+ preferred
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate CCNA Route/Switch preferred
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate CCNA Wireless preferred
  • Cisco Certified Network Specialist (CCNP) CCNP preferred
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate CCNA Voice preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years Network configuration and Troubleshooting
  • Minimum of 1 year Desktop, Server, or other Technology Infrastructure experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the OSI model for networking
  • Demonstrated knowledge of configuring and troubleshooting complex network equipment
  • Strong desire to improve technical skills and learn new systems when required; Take advantage of training when made available
  • Can articulate multiple ways to monitor network equipment and likely causes of outages
  • Ability to work well with others, enjoys being part of a team and not just an individual contributor
  • Facility for critical thinking and ability to prioritize tasks based on impact
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capacity
  • Good communication skills, both orally and written

May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
