Job Summary

The Data Scientist will play a vital role in maintaining and updating reserves/planning and reservoir/production engineering databases. Utilizing your proficiency with ValNav software and advanced SQL/Microsoft Access / Excel skills, you will be responsible for updating, extracting, organizing, and analyzing data to support reserve estimations and reporting processes. In addition, the position will support business development initiatives, strategic planning activities, and general business of the Subsurface & Operations team.

The Data Scientist will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely.

Responsibilities

Maintain and update reserves/planning and reservoir/production engineering ValNav / SQL databases, ensuring both data integrity and accessibility

Extract, manipulate, and analyze data from various sources to support reserve calculations and reporting, collaborating with engineers and additional departments as needed

Utilizing Power BI for data analytics and maintaining dashboards for repeated workflows

Conduct periodic data audits to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and consistency

Assist in the preparation of reserve reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders

Develop and maintain databases and spreadsheets to track reserve-related information efficiently

Stay current on ValNav software updates and enhance reservoir engineering staff’s proficiency in software

Seek and implement opportunities to streamline database management and reserves processes

Provide support for acquisitions, divestiture and other corporate development activities including working with and preparing 3rd party databases, engineering support, management of data room files, etc.

Provide support for strategic planning activities, including exporting monthly or quarterly forecasts

Other duties as assigned and trained on, including assisting technical team by updating wellbore schematics, tracking AFEs, gathering data from well files, updating presentations, etc.

Qualifications/Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or other technical degree

Minimum 5 years’ experience in drilling completion production reserves reservoir or data group

Proficiency in ValNav software for reserves management and analysis required

Proficiency in Microsoft Power BI Data, creating dashboards, data flows, and ensuring accuracy from multiple data sources

Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data visualization techniques

Strong understanding of reserves databases and working knowledge of petroleum reserves concepts

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience as a reservoir engineering tech or related roles in the oil and gas industry preferred

Advanced skills with Microsoft Access and SQL databases strongly preferred

Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with large datasets accurately, independently proofing work to minimize errors

Ability to work and problem solve independently with limited guidance

Effective communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
