The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest district courts among the country's 94 federal judicial districts. The district courts, combined with the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, make up the judicial branch of the federal government. The Southern District of Texas consists of the following seven divisional offices: Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Laredo, McAllen and Victoria.

We are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Certified Realtime Court Reporter in Houston, Texas. Telework Opportunities exist after needed training.

Level 3 ($119,894) realtime certification required.
Level 4 ($125,342) realtime and merit certification required.

Representative Duties

A court reporter attends and records verbatim by shorthand or mechanical means court sessions or other proceedings, as specified by statute, rule, or order of court. The court reporter transcribes promptly the proceedings requested by a party who has agreed to pay the fees established by the Judicial Conference, and any proceedings that a judge or the court may direct. It is also the duty of the court reporter to file a transcript or provide an electronic sound recording to the court, without charge, of all arraignments, pleas, and proceedings in connection with the imposition of sentence in criminal cases. Certification of the recording by the court reporter is required.

Qualifications

Applicants shall possess the following minimum qualifications:
  • At least one year of prime court reporting experience in the freelance field of service or in other courts or a combination thereof.
  • Qualification by testing for listing on the registry of professional reporters of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), or passed an equivalent qualifying examination.
  • Certification as a Realtime Reporter by having completed the Certified Realtime Reporter examination offered by the NCRA, or passed an equivalent qualifying examination.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to divisional offices.
Applicants having the following additional qualifications will be preferred:
  • A Certificate of Merit from the NCRA (or the equivalent).
  • Proficiency with software or windows based program comparable to Case Catalyst and/or Eclipse.
The successful candidate must be able to work irregular hours as dictated by the Court.

Employees of the United States Courts are not included in the government's Civil Service classification. They are, however, entitled to the same benefits as other federal government employees.

Employees who work for the Court are considered "at-will" and work at the pleasure of the Court. As a condition of employment, successful applicants will be subject to a background check, credit check, and/or records check with law enforcement agencies. Also, this position is subject to mandatory electronic funds transfer participation for payment of net pay.
