DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Health Department (HHD) Bureau of Pollution Control is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Environmental Investigator III, to perform the following duties.


  • This is a field position 95% of the time.
  • Oversees the daily technical inspections and investigative work of Environmental Investigator Is and IIs, including work assignments and schedules.
  • Reviews field enforcement activity, including investigation surveys and sampling reports for adherence to established standards; documents and records actions taken.
  • Inspects and takes lead in various establishments or locations to investigate Apartment Complexes.
  • Respond to complaints relating to water intrusion, odors, pest infestation, health code, and other minimum standards issues.
  • City health ordinances and recommends corrective action; performs follow-up inspections; issues warnings or citations.
  • Must cross train new staff and may conduct inspections in Clean Rivers, Bio Watch, and Complaints.
  • Troubleshoots and makes minor repairs to instruments.
  • Determines treatment plant dosages and troubleshoots treatment problems.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve infrequent exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or a closely related degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of pollution/environmental control experience are required.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
