Description
The Meter Technician I position performs entry level duties related to water meter installation, meter reading, and maintenance of water meters and related equipment. This position is classified as safety-sensitive and/or a DOT position and is subject to random drug testing in accordance with City policies.

Essential Job Functions (as required under ADA)The following duties are considered essential and must be performed, with or without reasonable accommodations:

Water Meter Maintenance & Repair:
- Repair minor leaks inside water meter boxes by replacing damaged parts.
- Troubleshoot electronic components for automated meter reading systems and replace damaged parts as necessary.

Meter Reading & Billing Support:
- Read and record consumption of residential and commercial water meters, verifying that readings are within parameters.
- Troubleshoot issues related to meters and reading equipment.
- Perform routine turn on/turn off water meter for new service, terminations, cut-off for non-payment, and reconnections.
- Accurately document work is performed, and materials used in service orders and work logs.
- Remove or lock meters for consumption on inactive accounts.

Safety & Equipment Use:
- Operate a City vehicle in compliance with traffic laws; conduct routine vehicle inspections and wear seatbelts at all times.
- Use and maintain assigned tools, mobile devices, and other related equipment.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions and maintain accessibility to meter pits.
Non-Essential Job Functions (Supportive but not fundamental to the job)
The following duties support the role but are not considered essential. They may be reassigned or modified if necessary:
- Provide input on efficiency improvements within the unit's service operations.
- Represent the City at public events, community meetings, or training sessions.
- Assist other City departments as needed for special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
- Valid Texas Drivers license
Supplemental Information
Knowledge of:
- City streets, minor plumbing and electronics, and meter equipment
- Water meters (parts and equipment); water pressures, and meter valves
- English grammar, spelling, punctuation
Skill in:
- Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
- Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
- Operating hand tools and driving a truck
- Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
Ability to:
- Troubleshoot water meter problems effectively and efficiently
