DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Public Library (HPL) is looking for a hands-on and highly engaged manager to bring their passion and creativity for the Kendall Neighborhood Library. Successful candidates will have strong leadership skills, an ability to inspire staff, a passion for serving communities, and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.

The essential job duties and responsibilities of the Librarian III - (Kendall Library) will include:
- Possess exceptional leadership skills to oversee and manage the activities and daily operations of the neighborhood library.
- Take initiative to creatively solve problems and possess sound decision-making skills.
- Ensure employees are prepared, motivated, productive, and challenged in their work assignments to ensure maximum performance.
- Exhibit a high level of creativity for adaptive and innovative services, programming, and outreach
- Ensures that staff provide engaging Out-of-School Time (OST) programming during the school year.
- Establish and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with community groups, other government agencies, community organizations, other employees, and the public.
- Have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, the internet, and other technologies.
- Interact with customers at the Customer Service Desk, assisting with information requests, provide technology assistance, and offer programming.
- Make recommendations for improvements in services, resources, and the collection.
- Work one evening a week and every other weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday).
- Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
(3) Three years of library experience are required, including one year of management experience.
PREFERENCES
- Experience in personnel management and supervision.
- Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.
- Knowledge of library operations and organization, including services, activities, staffing, facilities, and equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
- Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Experience providing training to colleagues preferred.
- Knowledge of library trends and current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Sirsi Symphony.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Validate Driver's License preferred. Bilingual skills (Spanish/English).
