Description
Position Summary:
The Fire Inspector conducts fire and life-safety inspections to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes and standards. This role involves identifying hazards, educating the public, maintaining relationships with stakeholders, and supporting the overall fire prevention program.
Essential Functions:
Fire Inspector duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Conduct Inspections
Perform comprehensive inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential establishments to identify and document existing or potential fire hazards.
Order correction of dangerous conditions in accordance with applicable codes, standards, policies, and procedures.
Educational Outreach
Inspect schools for fire hazards, conduct fire drills, and educate students on hazards and drill procedures.
Promote fire safety awareness and preparedness within educational institutions.
Customer Service and Relationship Building
Respond to requests from citizens or businesses regarding fire code questions, providing accurate information and guidance as needed.
Investigate and research inquiries made to the department to address concerns effectively.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with inspectors from other municipal departments, private contractors, and business owners to support program goals and strategic initiatives.
Continuing Education
Stay updated on current fire codes and regulations through ongoing training and research.
Ensure knowledge remains current and applicable to inspection duties.
. Complaint Investigation
Receive and investigate complaints related to fire hazards, recommending or ordering corrective measures as necessary.
Escalate issues to supervisors when required to ensure prompt resolution.
Documentation and Reporting
Prepare detailed reports of inspections and maintain organized files on all records.
Participate in legal proceedings by presenting information accurately and professionally when required.
Plans Review
Assist in reviewing plans for new and existing buildings to verify compliance with current fire codes.
Other Duties
Contribute to the team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
1 year of previous relevant work experience is required
Supervisory:
No previous supervisory experience is required
Certifications/Licenses:
Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certification as a Fire Inspector (Inspector I & II and Plans Examiner)
Partial College Education (Completed 30 Credit Hours)
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Preferred: Previously trained in NIMS IS‐100, IS‐200, ICS‐300, ICS‐400, IS‐700, IS‐800
