Essential Job Functions
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Examines residential and commercial construction plans and building permits for compliance with building, electrical, mechanical ,plumbing codes, and City ordinance.
- Explains codes and regulations to general contractors.
- Resolves code or structural design issues and assists the public with code questions and interpretations.
- Reviews applications for development permit in compliance with floodplain management guidelines.
- Makes required corrections to plans for conformance to regulations and/or ordinance.
- Consults with engineers, designers, developers, contractors, architects, and homeowners regarding codes and regulations for requested projects.
- Maintains permit log, files, and records management programs.
- Maintains records and files associated with plan review process.
- Prepares periodic reports and responds to requests for information.
- Assists with the front office as needed.
- Attends construction development meetings, design review meetings, and advises applicants of codes, policies and ordinances for proposed work.
- Assists Building Official and Building Inspectors and interacts with the Fire Marshall as needed.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
- At least one year of experience in municipal building inspection, plan review, combination, or related construction and educational experience
- Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.
- ICC Residential Plans Examiner Certification, or ability to obtain within one year
- ICC Commercial Plans Examiner Certification, or ability to obtain within two years
- Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM), or ability to obtain within three years
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Science or a related field
- Experience with Enterprise Permitting and Licensing (Energov) or other permitting software
- Proficiency with using BlueBeam software
- Bilingual in Spanish

- Microsoft products (Word , Excel, Outlook)
- Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
- Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
- Drawing interpretations and report development
- Organize and manage large amounts of information and multiple projects simultaneously
- Meet schedules and deadlines of the work
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
