About the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis
There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government. Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One.

With approximately 1.17 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. Precinct One’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic population is roughly 33 percent African American, 38 percent Latino, 21 percent Anglo, 6 percent Asian and 2 percent other or multiple races. Precinct One stretches south to Brazoria County and reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County. The Precinct’s territory includes a large section of Downtown Houston, including the Downtown Harris County Courthouse Complex, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park and the BBVA Compass Stadium. Other notable landmarks include the 263-acre NRG Park Complex and the renowned Texas Medical Center. The Precinct is also the higher educational home to Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston and the University of St. Thomas. Precinct One manages more than 21 parks, 10 community centers, numerous hike-and-bike trails, three maintenance service centers and several area offices, all of which provide an array of services to Precinct One residents.

What you will do at Precinct One
We are seeking a responsible and dependable Passenger Van Driver to support our youth summer program, Discovery Camp. The ideal candidate will safely transport children ages 5 to 13 to and from camp locations, ensuring a positive and secure travel experience. This role requires a mature individual who is attentive, organized, and enjoys working with youth. **This is a seasonal position starting June 1, 2026 and ending August 7, 2026**

Essential Duties:
  • Safely transport Discovery Camp participants (ages 5–13) to and from camp and designated pickup/drop-off locations
  • Prepare and serve lunch for campers, including items such as hot dogs, chips, and cookies
  • Create and assemble certificates and giveaway bags for camp participants
  • Assist with arts and crafts activities, especially for the final camp event
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections to ensure safety, cleanliness, and overall appearance
  • Support basic janitorial tasks to help maintain a clean and organized camp environment
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned to support the overall success of the camp program

Requirements

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional driving experience, preferably in a transportation or youth program setting
  • Proven experience operating 15-passenger vans safely and efficiently
  • Comfortable driving on highways, overpasses, and in various traffic conditions
Licensure:
  • Must have valid Texas Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated safe driving practices and a clean driving record
  • Strong ability to work effectively with children from diverse backgrounds, maintaining a positive and respectful environment
  • Knowledge of vehicle safety procedures and ability to keep vehicles clean, well-maintained, and in good working condition
  • Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to camp safety protocols
  • Dependable and punctual, with strong time management skills
  • Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate and work well with others in a fast-paced environment

General Information

Location:
  • Primary work location is at Deussen Park, in a camp cabin located at 12303 Sonnier St., Houston, TX 77044
Working Environment:
  • Transportation will be conducted using 15-passenger vans
  • Daily interaction with children aged 5 to 13, as well as teen and adult staff members
  • General working hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; flexibility is required as hours may vary depending on camp needs and scheduled activities
  • Active, outdoor setting with exposure to varying weather conditions and camp-related environments
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and transport supplies and materials needed for daily camp duties (up to 25 lbs.)
  • Must be able to safely enter and exit a 15-passenger van, which may require stepping up approximately 1 to 1.5 feet
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving, as well as stand, walk, bend, and reach as needed throughout the day
  • Must be physically able to work in outdoor environments, which may include walking on uneven terrain and exposure to various weather conditions
  • Requires alertness and quick response to ensure the safety of children during transport and camp activities

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
