Position Overview:
Under the Administrative Supervision of the WIC Director, the Trainer/Nutrition Education Specialist is responsible for providing assistance with developing, administering and documenting training and orientation of WIC staff to comply with the Texas Department of State Health Services and Harris County Public Health Services requirements dealing with Nutrition Education and Training.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the development and submission of the annual Nutrition Education Plan to the State Agency and monitors for compliance by assuring all materials and handouts are available by maintaining Nutrition Education inventory.
  • Provides technical assistance and trains staff regarding Nutrition Education policy and procedures, and serves on/conducts Nutrition Education Committee meetings.
  • Assists with new staff orientation and administers trainings according to State Agency and Harris County Public Health including Public Health Preparedness training.
  • Assists in developing new educational materials (aids, charts, tools) and/or lessons to ensure employees are meeting the needs of WIC participants.
  • Works as a Certifying Authority to determine applicant eligibility and provides NE to WIC participants with emphasis on Client Centered Nutrition Education as needed.
  • Promotes positive client services and resolves client concerns in a timely manner as the Specialist for questions about income, residency policies and procedures.
  • Oversees quality control and assurance of lab related activities and conducts laboratory procedures on WIC participants as needed.
  • Participates as a member of the WIC administrative team to assess and recommend changes in local policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

  • Nutritionist with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in: Human Nutrition or Dietetics, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition or Home Economics with Food and Nutrition major (24 semester hours credit in human food and nutrition)

OR

Experience:

  • Five (5) years' experience as a WIC Certification Specialist in a WIC program required.

License:

  • Valid Texas Driver's License

  • Must be willing to flex work hours when required, including weekends.
  • Able to travel within Harris County as needed.

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands:

  • This is a largely sedentary role. However, this job may require bending and standing for long periods of time. Some duties would require the ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
