Description

Ideal Candidate: Experienced, Hazmat-certified Commercial Driver to join our team on a part-time, weekend-only, on-call and contract basis. This role is ideal for a reliable and safety-conscious professional who is comfortable transporting hazardous materials and other goods, including at the Port. A TWIC card, valid driver’s license, and clean driving history are required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely operate commercial motor vehicles, including box trucks, goosenecks, and other assigned equipment, in compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Transport hazardous materials in accordance with the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), following all required safety procedures, placarding requirements, and documentation standards.
  • Operate material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jacks, forklifts) to load, unload, and secure cargo as required.
  • Conduct pre-trip, and post-trip inspections to ensure mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment are in good working order; submit vehicle condition reports as required.
  • Review and verify shipping documentation (e.g., bills of lading, delivery orders, manifests, and hazardous material shipping papers) for accuracy prior to transport.
  • Review operations notifications or dispatch instructions for assignment details, including loading/unloading requirements and special handling procedures.
  • Secure cargo properly to prevent shifting, damage, or spillage, and ensure compliance with all DOT cargo securement requirements.
  • Maneuver trucks safely into loading and unloading positions, ensuring safe operations in tight or congested areas.
  • Obtain receipts and signatures for delivered goods, ensuring accurate and timely submission of required delivery paperwork.
  • Maintain accurate driving and service records, including DOT logbooks, hours of service, inspection reports, and handheld scanner entries when applicable.
  • Plan and execute efficient routes to meet agreed-upon delivery schedules while maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Communicate promptly with supervisor, clients, or designated contacts regarding delivery status, delays, or incidents.
  • Report any vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, cargo spills, or property damages immediately, following applicable incident reporting protocols.
  • Respond to emergencies or incidents involving hazardous materials according to regulatory guidelines and training protocols.
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of assigned vehicle, including fueling, minor upkeep, and scheduling repairs as needed.
  • Perform other related transportation and delivery services as needed
Qualifications

QUALIFICIATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Commercial Driver, operating commercial vehicles, including box trucks and goosenecks.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), OSHA, and DOT requirements
  • CDL – Required (with Hazmat Endorsement).
  • TWIC Card – Required when reporting to the Port.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Clean driving history: No alcohol-related incidents in the last 3 years & No more than 3 moving violations in the last 3 years.
  • Strong knowledge of Dangerous Goods / Hazardous Cargo handling procedures.
  • Experience operating material handling equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks and other loading equipment) when required and with proper certification
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

NOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Safe handling, transportation, and placarding of hazardous materials in compliance with Hazmat regulations.
  • Vehicle inspection procedures (pre-trip and post-trip).
  • Load securement and cargo handling methods.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for minor troubleshooting of vehicles.
  • Company policies, safety protocols, and written work instructions.
  • Accurate completion of shipping paperwork, bills of lading, and DOT logbooks.
  • Navigation and route planning, including GPS and map reading.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication.
  • Customer service skills to maintain positive relationships with clients and port staff.
  • Time management to meet delivery deadlines and adapt to last-minute changes.
  • Follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Remain alert, focused, and safety-conscious during long shifts.
  • Adapt to high-pressure, fast-paced work environments.
  • Maintain attention to detail to ensure load accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Escalate safety or quality concerns promptly to management or QHSE.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY EXPECTATIONS

  • Follow all written work instructions, company policies, and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations at all times.
  • Comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), OSHA, and DOT requirements.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated by the task, location, or environmental conditions.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including vehicle cab and cargo space.
  • Immediately report any unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents, or quality concerns to management or the QHSE department.
  • Safely navigate warehouses, yards, and loading/unloading areas while following site-specific safety procedures.
  • Exercise caution when maneuvering in congested areas, including ports, warehouses, and public roadways.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Ability to perform vehicle inspections, secure loads, and handle equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Adapt to a variety of work settings, including outdoor environments with exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation, dust, and other weather-related conditions.
  • Capacity to work in various environmental conditions, including hot, cold, wet, dusty, or noisy settings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and climb in and out of vehicles multiple times per day.
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate vehicle controls, material handling equipment, and required tools.
  • Clear and effective verbal communication to interact with dispatch, customers, and team members.
  • Adequate hearing to understand spoken instructions in person, over the radio, or via telephone/mobile phone.
  • Visual acuity to read road signs, manifests, bills of lading, and other required documentation.

WORK SCHEDULE

Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours as necessary and on-call availability.
